Leong Centre for Healthy Children Symposium

October 9 - Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning

Call for Abstracts

The Edwin S.H. Leong Centre for Healthy Children invites abstract submissions for poster presentations at the 2025 Symposium. We welcome research that examines how addressing the social and structural determinants of health can improve outcomes for children.

Priority will be given to submissions from trainees and early career researchers whose work aims to advance child health and educational outcomes. We especially encourage submissions of research that is community-engaged, uses novel data science methods, and/or is policy-relevant.

As part of the submission process, applicants will also have the option to express interest in delivering a 3-minute quick-hit presentation during a plenary session with the symposium audience.

Abstract Guidelines

Applicants are required to submit a structured abstract that includes the following sections:

  • Title
  • Author(s) and affiliation(s)
  • Content (max. 300 words):
    • Introduction: This section should briefly introduce the purpose of the research and how it addresses the social and structural determinants of health to improve outcomes for children.
    • Methods: This section should briefly describe what research was done, how it was completed and who was involved.
    • Results: This section should describe what findings resulted from the study with relevant details (e.g., statistics, qualitative findings), as appropriate.
    • Discussion/Conclusion: This section should briefly summarize why it is important.

Abstract Evaluation

All submissions will be evaluated based on:

  • Relevance to symposium target audiences and objectives.
  • Demonstration of innovative, evidence-based, solutions-focused work.
  • Clarity and completeness of submission (e.g., use of plain language)
  • Evidence of multi-disciplinary collaboration is an asset

Presenter Responsibilities

  • All abstracts must be submitted and presented in English.
  • Attendees are expected to cover registration fees.
  • Where applicable, prior to submitting an abstract, confirming with their employer/supervisor/agency that participation in the conference will be supported.
  • Declaring any commercial or financial interests.
  • Willingness to present their abstract during the poster hall at the symposium. Submitting an abstract does not require you to participate in a Quick Hits plenary presentation.
